Damages That Happen When a Parked Car is Hit by a USPS*

It’s one thing worrying about being hit unexpectedly when driving on a public highway, but your vehicle can be badly damaged when legally parked on the side of the road or in a parking lot. Large delivery vehicles like those that deliver mail often bang into parked cars and other vehicles as they maneuver into a space or a turning in a hurry to deliver their parcels.

If you can prove that the driver was at fault, then you have the option of filing a claim against them for damages.

How a Parked Car Could be Hit by a Delivery Vehicle

USPS vehicles (like most delivery vehicles) trucks and vans are frequent sights in and around our cities and towns and all over the country. Drivers may hit a parked car if they misjudge the distance between them and the parked car or hit the car as they attempt to turn into a narrow entrance or turning, often when reversing. Although the driver error is the primary cause of these sorts of accidents, occasionally a vehicle component defect or malfunction such as a steering or brake defect can cause a vehicle to not perform correctly.

What You Could Do After Your Car Was Hit by a Vehicle

It is important to get as much evidence as you can at the accident scene. The driver is legally obligated to stop if their vehicle hits a parked car. Even if you are not present, the driver is expected by law to leave details of the accident and how to contact the relevant person in charge to arrange compensation.

If you are nearby, or in your car at the time of the crash, you should try and take pictures if you have a camera function on your cell phone. Photographic evidence of the damage done to your vehicle and the positions of both vehicles can be useful when submitting an insurance claim. If there were eye witnesses, it will be helpful to get their names and contact details so you can use their statements later on when submitting a claim.

Evidence You Need for a Claim Against

You will need the evidence from the crash site as well as any other documentation. This includes things like a damage report, a doctor’s report if anyone was injured, bills and other evidence of costs that you have had to deal with because your vehicle was hit.
